Early detection of cancer through biomarker-based screening

In most cancers, early diagnosis significantly improves prognosis. So far, however, most attempts at finding cancer biomarkers have either lacked the sensitivity to detect a small number of cancer cells among trillions of healthy body cells or the specificity required for use in routine screening, such as annual health checks.

Biocrates is participating in high-level international studies in search for biomarkers in breast, colon, ovary, and prostate cancer. Important partners in this area include oncotyrol—Center for Personalized Cancer Medicine or COBRED—Colon and Breast cancer Diagnostics. The data obtained so far suggest that combinations of generic and cancer-specific biomarkers may become important tools in early cancer detection, allowing current cancer treatments to be used to the best benefit of those suffering from the disease.
